PROJECTS
Senior Studio V: Campus Library
The University of New Haven is a growing university on the outskirts of downtown New Haven. The Peterson Library is located at the heart of the University in the academic quad. Influencing the design around the symbolic elements of the elm trees, and architectural planning of the city of New Haven will tie the library back to the city roots. Traditionally a library is aimed to be the main intellectual hub on college campuses. However, the Peterson Library has not been designed to support its growing population since it was built in 1970. Incorporating an open floor plan, open seating options, an updated café, and more study rooms for students will help this library better accommodate the students' academic needs. This design will allow students to grow and achieve academically and support this growing university.

Research was conducted into current and past library trends. Since the 1970s, there has been technological advances, growth in resources, changing student population, development in learning and teaching. Research of trends after 2000, talks more about libraries are needed to support changing users; group discussions, more social spaces. It has turned into a learning commons
Major influencing factors on university libraries since 2012 is the changing of learning and teaching methods, changing student populations and the biggest factor being technology.

Students well being is being taken into account. Many college students struggle with depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation, etc. Institutions are increasingly looking to support students holistically and promoting mindfulness.

A survey was sent to New Haven Students asking a series of questions about how they use and feel in the library. The questions were basic sentences to get an overall sense of many students use the space compared to another building on campus, and generally how student feel in the current library setting.

Concept Research.
The location of the University is just minutes from downtown New Haven CT. A city filled with rich history and intricate architecture. New Haven is often referred to as the "Elm City" because elm trees lined the New Haven Green. Elm Trees have a lot of symbolism and represent new beginnings, intuition, and inner strength. Along with that, New Haven architecture is very well known because of Yale University. The city is designed on a grid like pattern of nine square blocks.
